Synopsis: Ever wonder what the world does at night when all are asleep? This book allows you to hop on the back of a white owl and soar from above. A bird's eye view allows the reader to see all sorts of animals down below, including dear, fish, a raccoon, and a snake. Although it is simple with limited information, it is a nonfiction text perfect for young children either at school or before bed.
Book Notes: This book uses repetition and rhyming on every page, making it extremely engaging for young readers. Because every page ends in the same "while the world is sleeping," students can chime in after they see the pattern. The rhymes are particularly catchy in that every line rhymes except the last one.
Critique: I wish this book had more information about what each animal does at night, but the simplicity is useful for primary grade classrooms. I love the rhyme patterns and the repetitive nature of the story. It is also a relaxing read that serves to calm the listener, making it especially useful before bed or right after recess!
Classroom Activities: This book can be used for a variety of purposes. It can be a read aloud to introduce students to a science lesson on animals, particularly nocturnal ones. It can show students different rhyme patterns that they may not usually see in other poems. It can also be used if students are so young that they need to lay down for a nap.
