Synopsis: Junie B. Jones is back in this lighthearted, humorous read about Junie B's kindergarten's adventure. In this book, Junie B. Jones has found a love for winning and being the best. She must be the best at skipping, running, and hopping on one foot. In every endeavor, Junie B. seems to always come up second place, although she stays true to the claim that she is the best. During the school's carnival night, Junie B. ends up winning the cake walk, but the cake that draws her eye is a slimy, shiny, hard as a rock fruitcake. Although she has no desire to eat it, she finds it particularly useful as a stool to sit on in the car and at the kitchen table, which her parents find particularly funny.
Book Notes: Junie B. Jones is a classic that children gravitate towards during the early years of literacy. This would be a fabulous book to add to a first or second grade collection of books or series'. The writing is directed toward emergent readers, and the voice of the entire book is written in that of a kindergartner. The print is also large and spaced out - another aspect for young children.
Critique: Like all Junie B. Jones books, this one is clever and hilarious, even for adults! It was particularly enjoyable to read aloud, especially when Junie B. Jones speaks. This would be a great read aloud for kindergarten or first grade students, and it is sure to get the kids laughing. If young students are reluctant to read, I would recommend a Junie B. Jones book to introduce them to enjoyable, humorous books.
Classroom Activities: As previously stated, this is a wonderfully book to read aloud during morning or afternoon literacy hour. It is also advisable to keep a series of Junie B. Jones books in the room so students can read a variety of her books. They would also be useful when teaching about characters because Junie B. is so well developed in such a short book.
