Synopsis: "The Wolf and the Fox" is an extremely short tale about a fox who is servant to a wolf. The wolf continually tells the fox to get him something to eat, or else he will eat the fox. Three times in a row, the fox leads the wolf to food, but allows him to be caught and pummeled, eventually to death. Every instance the fox tells the wolf not to be such a glutton. The fox frequently outsmarts the wolf who eventually dies on his last endeavor, leaving the fox free to go wherever he wishes.
Book Notes: This is one of the many fairy tales collected by the Brother's Grimm. The entire book is a thick anthology full of folk tales from ancient Germany. If these stories are read aloud to children, it may be a good idea to find a picture book of the desired story, since there are no illustrations in this anthology. It is important to consider the context of the story as well. Some fairy tales can be very dark and violent, so they may be more appropriate for older elementary students.
Critique: "The Wolf and the Fox" is a very short tale that can be read easily by elementary school students. It is a story with a strong message about greed and gluttony. It also has strong hints of other fairy tales, such as "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Thumbling." It is a good fairy tale to read when studying folktales, Grimms, theme, or making connections.
