Additional Information:
  • Illustrated by Mary Azarian
  • Hardcover, 32 pages

Synopsis: When the Moon is Full is a beautiful picture book written in a series of poems.  Pollock describes the folkloric names of twelve moons of the year according to Native American tradition.  Each moon represents a different month along with its defining characteristics.  Pollock describes each month with a short, free verse poem.  Each page is elaborately illustrated by award winning illustrator Mary Azarian.

Book Notes: This book includes beautiful illustrations by Caldecott winner, Mary Azarian.  It is also completely written in free verse poetry, so it is a possible mentor text when teaching young students the concept of poetry.  Not all of Pollock's poems rhyme, so students can learn that not all poetry is rhyme based.  This book is also tied with Native American culture and their traditional views of each monthly moon.  Thus it is a wonderful resource when teaching about Native Americans or European settlers in the 1600s.

Critique: When the Moon is Full connects a number of subject areas within one beautifully written picture book.  The poems are short and smooth to convey an entire month in only a few phrases..  Pollock also includes facts about Native American culture and historic connections on every page, which help tie the book to social studies.  The illustrations are pleasing to look at and demonstrate each month in vivid detail.

Classroom Activities:  As previously stated, this book can be used to teach a lesson on writing poetry, Native American folklore, or even weather and months of the year.  Below are links to a variety of teacher resources.
